Ridley Scott Dismisses ‘Alien’ Prequel Rumors for ‘Prometheus’

For awhile, part of the intrigue of Prometheus was the always running rumor that it was a prequel to Alien in some long way. On the verge of the film’s first trailer being released this week, director Ridley Scott was interviewed about the film, and what he had to say regarding the prequel status is a bit disheartening for fans hoping for the rumor to be true.

In an interview with Filmophilia, the site asks Scott if the upcoming sci-fi epic is directly linked to Alien. His response? “Not at all. No…there’s a quote I did, a pretty good quote: By the end of the third act you start to realize there’s a DNA of the very first alien, but none of the subsequent aliens. To tell you what that is is a pity, and I’m not going to tell you, because it’s actually pretty good, pretty organic to the process and to the original. But we go back, we don’t go forward.”

They then asked later in the interview if we’d even see the xenomorph in Prometheus. “No. Absolutely not. They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. (He laughs) He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there.”

Scott talks about the entire film, and takes Alien questions left and right, during the full interview, which you can read here.

It’s interesting to see Scott dismiss a major hype factor for the film nearly six months before the release. You would think he would keep audiences guessing awhile. But, perhaps he’s simply tired of people comparing the two sci-fi series as well. Still, though, from what many have said about the trailer already, it still doesn’t take anything away from the film’s initial look and outstanding intrigue.

Prometheus will be released on June 8th, 2012.
