With all the information released yesterday from Empire about The Dark Knight Rises, the internet has been on fire with the news. Now today, there is a weird rumor going around that involves Batgirl herself Barbara Gordon. But, what is true and what is false? We look at the rumor from every possibility, both true and false.
What started this gigantic batch of rumors is a photo going around, from the NYC set from two weeks ago released today, that shows a trailer door that reading “E. Page, B. Gordon”. As you can see here:
As trusted TDKR site Batman-News says, this is absolutely false given that Page is not in the film at all, ”the trailer in this image is not the same as the ones used in NYC”, and the timing is just weird, given that the “Eight Years Later” information was just released yesterday.
And while Batman-News certainly does have all the evidence in their favor, it’s only fair to cover both bases. Let’s assume, for a second, the other side of the situation. Juno Temple, who looks a lot like Ellen Page, has been confirmed for the film, but her character hasn’t. While it seems extremely unlikely, she could have been mistaken for Page, and she could in fact be playing Barbara Gordon.
However, more rumors have been dealt in her favor that she’ll in fact be playing Holly Robinson, Catwoman’s (Anne Hathaway) ally and sidekick. She’s been described as a “street wise Gotham girl”, but really, that describes most of the females in the Batman comics.
The future timeline only complicates things, meaning everything we’ve seen in the first two films is considerably older. Wayne, Gordon, Lucius, Alfred, Gordon’s children, the villains, the gadgets. We’re dealing with a side of Batman that is close to the more intelligent hero everyone knows. Even Nolan himself said in the Empire information, ”He’s an older Bruce Wayne; he’s not in a great state.”
Also, the most likliest of circumstance is that Barbara would see her father in the hospital, following his admittance after being attacked by Bane (which you can see in the teaser trailer). If she was brought in for simply a cameo, its quite possible they could have called in an additional trailer at the last minute, that looks different than the other cast members’.
It’s said Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s GCPD cop character plays a substantial part as one of the few cops unafraid to continue doing his true duty after Bane injures Gordon, seemingly putting an end to the rumors that his character is a part of “The League of Shadows”.
Overall, the rumor seems most likely to be false, but then again, this is Christopher Nolan we’re talking about. Anything can happen, and anything could be very surprising. The time jump adds even more uncertainty, and definitely opens a new realm of possibilities. While we looked at the rumor from basically both sides, it’s still undetermined.
If there’s any confirmation from the studio or Nolan himself, we’ll update you.
